It seems to me that the last couple of years have been forming up to a ball that will soon explode. All the build up to CCGs, Public Health, Well-Being Boards etc. No wonder it feels like we don’t have time for a normal work/life balance. Our daily work now entails of record keeping, measuring outcomes, CPDs, planning, working in collaboration and not forgetting ‘engaging’ with the community.
Community Pharmacy seems to be worse off. The other sectors seem to know their place and role. However, in the community it seems we are still fighting for a place and for recognition. A lot of us contractors have been very innovative and have found ways to reduce NHS costs. We have created endless pathways that would highlight the role of the pharmacist within a patients journey. Our IT skills have increased by leaps and bounds to keep in contact with patients through social media. Despite all this effort, there just doesn’t seem to be any light at the end.
Many community pharmacists have embraced the role of services, PGDs, screening and health education. Yet it feels that this is still not enough to get us a place in the new NHS. Commissioners seem disengaged from us. Public perception of pharmacy is being blinded by the lack of role for pharmacists in their treatment.
Does this mean we have the wrong leaders? Does it mean we don’t have a role? Or is it simply we try too hard to please? Is it this desperation that hinders our progress?! Do we hide and not shout out what we do, and how well we do it? Let’s share success stories and build a portfolio that can not be refused.
I urge all pharmacists to fight for a role in the new NHS by showing off what we can do. Post me your success stories so we can start to build a portfolio. Its time to be proud and confident!
